When will the Sony PS3 become a viable competitor in the US market (for video games)?

Maybe it already is?

I personally don’t think so yet.

What do you all think?

Example thoughts:
1. More software (that are FUN)
2. Cheaper price
3. Better Online service than XBox Live
4. When it learns to reach a mainstream like Nintendo has
5. When it caters to the American gamer like XBox (360) has
5. You know the drill. It’s really just an open discussion.

    1. Check(although this is up to preference)
    2. Sony is already losing a bunch of money at the price theyre being sold
    3. I’ve never used live, but the PSN has all of the features i need for communication and content distribution
    4. I dont think it will. The Wii is a gaming console. Both the PS3 and the XBox360 are multimedia machines
    5. I dont understand this one

Well, seeing as how it’s outsold the 360 in Europe and Asia AND the US since last January, and outsold the Wii in Asia for the first time(PS3 is the only console to outsell the Wii so far) I would say the PS3 is a pretty serious competitor. And MS will most-likely announce a new Xbox within the next 2 years or so.

And more software? What about MGS4? Uncharted: Drakes Fortune? GT5? Resistance 12? Motorstorm 12? Little Big Planet? HOME? All are VERY good games that will be out by the end of this year. The PS3 is just getting started. The only big 360 exclusive to come out this year is Gears of War 2. And that will truly push the 360 to it’s limits. Even a game as big and complex like MGS4 only uses around 30% of the PS3’s total power.

Actually Sony ruined the PS3 launch by having two different models and with the outrageous price tag. With the state that our economy is in, most average gamers aren’t willing to fork over $399 or $499 when they can get a WII for $250 and a 360 for $299.

Sony should have priced the PS3 more favorably to the gamers who made the PS2 king of the hill. Those gamers have been priced out of the market for Sony’s PS3.

    1. Still waiting on fun games! Right now everything seems to be FPS (First Person Shooters) or driving games for the PS3. We still haven’t seen any RPG’s and that was the PS2’s fortune along with sports game.

    2. I doubt we’ll see anything cheaper than the 40GB $399 price tag and for most people that’s out of range of their budget.

3.Nope ! Live is the best console online experience period !

    4. Until Sony gets their price in line, the PS3 won’t be mainstream like the WII or PS2.

    5. Not sure I understand but the PS3 right now has a following of people who weren’t necessarily PS2 gamers but just wanted the next big hyped electronic item. For most PS2 gamers, they haven’t gotten a PS3 yet.

    1. Opinion, I personally believe the ps3 has the best software
    2. If you look at what it comes with and that the 360 doesn’t(it requires ridiculously expensive add ons), its much cheaper than the 360
    3. Whats better about LIVE? You pay $50 a year and get a laggier connection
    4. There are developing a break apart controller that can work like the Wiimote
    5. You fail to realize that American gamers is the ONLY thing the 360 caters to, and the ps3 has been outselling it there too, You seen Asian or European sales numbers? In Asia the 360 is in dead last, even behind the ps2.

The Playstation 3 is already becoming a viable competitor in the U.S. Market for video games.

The PS3 has outsold the Xbox 360 every month of this year in the U.S. except for 1 or 2 months. I know that the 360 outsold the PS3 in the U.S. by just 900 units in April and the 360 outsold the PS3 another month of this year as well, but other than that, the PS3 has been selling more.

    1. The PS3 already has plenty of really great PS3 exclusive software titles and there’s a lot of Playstation 3 exclusives coming out. The advantage that the Playstation 3 and Sony has when it comes to games is that there are MORE games that are actually published by Sony, but Microsoft has had mostly just a bunch of 3rd party exclusives and hardly any 1st party games at all.

Saints Row 2 is coming to the PS3 and before it was a 360 exclusive franchise. Bioshock is coming to the PS3 in November as well as any other future Bioshock games, Mass Effect could come to the PS3 now that the developer of Mass Effect (Bioware) has been acquired by EA Games, and it is rumored that Dead Rising 2 could come to the PS3 as well.

If you want to talk about software, Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet are the biggest PS3 game titles for this Fall, and there’s Motorstorm Pacific Rift as well as SOCOM Confrontation coming this fall as well, and that’s a solid lineup.

And don’t even get me started about talking about all the PS3 exclusives for 2009: Killzone 2, Infamous, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Infamous, Heavy Rain, God of War 3 and plenty of other exclusives that have yet to be confirmed. Did you know that Rockstar Games is doing a PS3 exclusive too (L.A. Noire)? Believe me, there’s TONS of PS3 software coming.

    2. As far as price goes, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 worldwide for a long time now even at the higher price point, but I think that once the PS3 gets down to $299.99 in the United States, that’s when PS3 sales will start to really pick up.

    3. Sony has improved it’s Online service significantly since launch and there’s lots of new features coming for the Playstation Store such as a Video Store, Music Store, and Playstation HOME. The Video Store is supposed to be coming this Summer and HOME is on track to be released late 2008-early 2009.

    4. As far as mainstream goes, the PS3 will reach a more mainstream audience once the price is lower. Sony has always attracted Casual gamers because there would be no way in the world that the PS1 and PS2 sold over 100+million consoles without casual gamers buying them. When it comes to the mainstream audience and casual gamers, that’s an area where Microsoft has had trouble with because Microsoft mostly attracts just ******** gamers.

    5. The Playstation 3 already caters to the American gamer, but the PS3 will cater to the American gamer even more once the PS3’s next biggest shooters: Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 are released as well as other violent and bloody games that are coming out on the PS3, but the thing that makes the PS3 so unqinue and different is that it caters to a wider audience of gamers. Microsoft only caters to ******** gamers and the ******** gamer audience isn’t as big as the casual gamer audience. It’s going to take more than selling more consoles in the U.S. to win a console war because Europe and Japan are just as important, and those are 2 areas where the PS3 has been performing very well in.

I would say that in about 2-3 years, that’s when the PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360 worldwide in total numbers sold.

    1. More software… like more games?
    More features?
    More types of software?
Last time I checked PS3 had those
    2. You get what you pay for.
    3. How can it be improved further?
    4. It is mainstream in a gamer sense.
    Nintendo Wii is nto mainstream
It is more of a toy than a games console.
    5. Catering to stupid people whove made up their minds based on 0 fact is rather hard.
    5. (again?) I do.
