What is the best writing and editing software on the market today?

I just graduated from college with a degree in Journalism (w/creative writing minor), and I need the best software for my new job. I have tried Microsoft Office and it does not do much for my needs. I need a program designed for professional writers that has a strong ability to detect and correct grammar problems.

lets see… openoffice.org is perfect for price.

well also, i would be thinking that detecting grammar errors should be your buisness and dont depend on comptuers for that. do it the old fashion way. type it up best you can. re read it on the screen, and print it and read it. mark the errors. makes you a better writer overall.

You may want to check out this program. Sounds like the thing you may be looking for.

No program is going to be very good at grammar because of the fluid nature of grammatical rules. The best way of checking grammar is your brain.

If you want professional writing software that is not a word processor and produces nice looking documents, take a look at Tex/Latex. It’s basically a mark-up editing system (like HTML). There are some good GUI front-ends for it as well. If you’re using Windows, take a look at MikTex.
