I create custom marketing pieces and ads for realtors. I’ve been using Microsoft Publisher 2007 and feel if I had better software I could feel better about my work especially since we are becoming increasingly high end with our listings. I don’t necessarily want to do graphic design but I really enjoy desktop publishing and want to keep learning and apply it to the real estate field I’m in. What software do you recommend?

There are many tools available. I’d consider Microsoft Word since you can embed graphics, images and many other file types. You can do multiple column output and can experience What You See Is What You Get. Many other types of files, such as spreadsheets, graphics, and Visio drawings can be embedded in Word.
Most people do not know about the many features available for Word. I’d use Microsoft Word as the basic application and then learn to use other applications such as drawing programs, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Visio to add interesting content. You can export this as HTML from Word.
Another tool I’d learn is Macromedia Flash. You can create dynamic graphical displays for the web to liven up any web site.

Adobe Creative Suite - especially Photoshop is the ’standard’ for graphics but Quark is the best DTP package

You can find everything that you need with Adobe CS3. If you learn Photo shop and In design you will have all the tools that you need to create documents for real estate. It is pretty easy there are tutorials and what not. Way more advanced than what Microsoft has to offer if you ask me. Just as far as the control that you have and the integration to multiple publishing platforms (print or web).
